Perry is celebrating "March is Reading Month" as well. Our theme for the month is, "Wild About Reading"!
We chose the theme "Wild About Reading" to align with our One School One Book event. Our book selection for OSOB is Ivan, A Gorilla's True Story by author Katherine Applegate. It is the companion picture book to the novel The One and Only Ivan by the same author.
Our OSOB event is scheduled for next week, with Thursday being our read day. Each student will receive a copy of the book to take home. (Our OSOB is serving as our Spring book giveaway.)
Also scheduled for next Thursday is our Family Reading Night. I will be staffing a station that will feature an art project (Ivan paper bag gorilla puppets) focused on our book.
In an effort to further link our theme, OSOB read, and our Family Reading Night projects, we are hosting a door decoration contest for teachers and staff. Anyone that has a door has been invited to participate. The door decoration contest expands the theme to include animals/habitats, and student artwork will be incorporated.
Some teachers have invited guest readers to visit and read in their classrooms as part of their March Is Reading Month celebrations.
Lastly, we kicked off Perry's Student of the Week program this week for March Is Reading Month. Each teacher will select a student who best meets Perry's expectations of being safe, responsible, respectful, and kind. Students of the Week will receive a certificate and a token for the Book Nook.
For YDL Bookmobile for Perry ELC
Perry is scheduled to have the YDL Bookmobile visit on March 19. This will be the first since before Winter Break. Our visit last month was canceled due to vehicle mechanical issues. Our smaller/younger (Pre-K and Kindergarten) students are loving the bookmobile visits. First grade teachers aren't scheduling time on the bookmobile because of space issues. The library has recommended 10 students at a time on the bookmobile.

We're aiming for a school-wide goal of 15,000 reading minutes to earn a bonus spirit day. Next week, get ready for our Picture Book March Madness bracket – students and staff, cast your votes! We're also thrilled to welcome guest readers the following week. And to top it off, our 2nd grade classes are exploring the YDL Whittaker branch and getting their library cards. Let's make this a month of reading to remember!

Get ready for a school-wide reading adventure! For March is Reading Month, we're participating in One School One Book with "Dog Days" by Karen English. This year's selection tells the story of Gavin, a new student facing bullying and a broken snow globe. To make things right, Gavin starts walking his aunt's dog to earn money. Through his journey, students will explore themes of financial literacy, friendship, and resilience, while witnessing how Gavin confronts his challenges and learns to fix his mistakes.
Bookmobile
We're thrilled to welcome the YDL Bookmobile for its monthly visit! This program introduces many of our students to the valuable services provided by the Ypsilanti District Library, fostering a love of reading and community engagement.
This month, students have the opportunity to enhance their literacy skills and earn Library Store rewards by completing reading logs and sharing stories through read-alouds. We're proud to acknowledge the 8 students who have already earned books from our book vending machine by completing their reading logs.
